· WHY SHOULD I BE ‘ANTI’ OXIDANTS ·
Antioxidants are powerful molecules that are found naturally in fruits, vegetables and other plant sources, including the Camellia Sinensis, our beloved tea plant. But why are antioxidants so important? On a daily basis there is a war raging in our bodies and antioxidants are our knights in shining armour. They help our bodies battle free radicals and oxidative stress.
· IT’S BAD TO BE A RADICAL ·
Day after day, our bodies normally produce small amounts of something called ‘free radicals’. They are the result of a process that commonly occurs in our bodies called ‘oxidation’. For example, digestion is a process of oxidation. Although free radicals can be harmful, storming our defensive walls, antioxidants in our body come to our rescue and help to keep them in check. So when a balance is maintained between free radicals and antioxidants, our bodies function normally. Thus, the name: ‘anti’ oxidants – they provide the balance to oxidation.
Problems start when free radicals increase in numbers and overwhelm our body’s ability to neutralize them. At this point, free radicals produce cellular damage. This is called oxidative stress. When this happens, such cell damage can lead to diseases such as cancer, diabetes, heart disease, arthritis, Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s.

Many consider tea to be one of the most potent health drinks ever. Various medical studies have shown that green tea in particular offers a multitude of health benefits. The most heralded benefit is its rich natural source of antioxidants, which is linked to cancer prevention.
Besides reducing certain types of cancer, these natural antioxidants are believed to boost immunity to disease such as type 2 diabetes, Alzheimer’s and heart health by helping to lower blood pressure, cholesterol and inflammation in the body.
Green tea is generally considered to be the healthiest type of tea because it is unfermented. Black tea also contains many of the same valuable health benefits but since it is fermented, many of the natural polyphenols (which are antioxidants) are converted. Green tea is thought to have as much as 90% more polyphenols than black tea!
Also, it is worth noting that cellular damage caused by the free radicals accumulates with age throughout the body. So build up those ramparts of defenses and increase your heroes by including these important antioxidants in your diet. Think of them as soldiers defending against the onslaught of free radicals, and safeguarding your health in the process.
