Tea has been harvested in the Yunnan province since the 2nd century, and the tea plant is generally thought to be indigenous to the region. The two main growing regions of the Yunnan province are the prefectures of Xishauangbanna in the south, and Simao in the north. The Xishauangbanna prefecture is famous for its Six Tea Mountains. Modern Yunnan teas are grown from a strain of an ancient broad-leafed tea tree. There are many ancient tea trees still standing, including one near the China-Burma border that stands over 100 feet tall, and is thought to be over 1700 years old.
