Panettone, the sweet bread loaf originally from Milan, is traditionally prepared for Christmas and New Years in Italy. A 15th century legend credits the invention of this fanciful bread to the nobleman falconer, Ughetto Atellani, who fell in love with Adalgisa, the daughter of a poor baker named Toni. To capture her heart, the nobleman disguised himself as a baker and baked a bread to which he added dried raisins, candied lemon, and orange peel.
