With the onset of Prohibition in the United States, the popularity of iced teas soared, as people needed a viable alternative to alcohol! However, in the WWII period, most of the green tea supply was cut off and Americans had to resort to British-controlled black tea from India. As a result, Americans came out of the war drinking mainly black tea.
Today, Southerners swear by their sweet iced tea and drink it by the gallons. As a result, when people order tea in the south, chances are that’s what they’ll get – sweet iced tea. Outside of the south, on the other hand, iced teas are served unsweetened or “black."
